RECENT DEVASTATION: On December 3rd, Typhoon Bopha hit the Philippine Islands. This was the strongest tropical cyclone to ever hit the southern islands, making landfall as a category 5 super typhoon with winds of 160 mph and resulting in mass destruction in it’s wake. Damage estimates at 42 billion dollars (PHP) as well as 1067 people confirmed dead, 800 still missing, and 80,000 people left homeless. When we heard the news at Ballard Church we immediately called our contacts there and committed to sending a team and resources.
WHERE WE ARE WORKING: Our Ballard Church team will be helping out in the southern islands in the Mindanao region. We will be working in Butuan City, an urban area with 310,000 people and we will have an opportunity to work with many families whose homes and lives were devastated by this natural disaster. Our goal is to share hope, love, and encouragement with everyone we meet.
THE AHON PROJECT: Part of our work will be with families and children through the “Ahon Project.” This is a ministry that provides basic necessities—food, clothing, and schooling for children whose families grew up at the city dump. These families make their living off the garbage and scraps that they can find as they sift through the trash. In addition we have some construction projects we will work on including helping build a foundation for an organization that owns some property nearby. They have a vision for a boys orphanage, girls orphanage, a micro financed business of raising pigs, and a home for sex trafficked girls. Over the next few years we want to send people and resources to help them accomplish their vision. This is a big vision and will take time to fulfill. This trip is sure to be life changing as we engage with people and build relationships with those who are living in poverty. In addition we will have the chance to work with kids involved in a national child sponsorship program and our hope is to be able to get sponsors for these kids in Seattle to help provide for their basic needs.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Although BC is a new church plant and we have a younger congregation our heart is to serve the world and make a difference. We are all about impacting lives both locally and internationally. The Philippine Islands have a population of 93,260,798 and there are 12.3% evangelical Christians. However, it is considered one of the most open Asian countries to the gospel and most receptive in the whole world. Our hope is to spread the good news and love of Jesus Christ through our words and actions.
YOU CAN HELP! Some members from our Philippines team are doing a fundraiser at Ballard Church on Valentines Day, February 14th. They are providing drop in babysitting from 5:30pm-9:30pm for kids of all ages. This is a fun, safe, event for your family and anyone you know in Seattle who needs some child-care and wants to support a good cause. To read more about that fun kids and family event click here.
Or if you would like to help one of our team members go on the trip you can give a tax-deductible donation during one of our Sunday services or e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org
